Jogighopa Caves

Jogighopa is an industrial city located in Bongaigaon district of Assam. The geographical coordinates of Jogighopa are 26° 14' 0" north and 90° 35' 0" east. It is situated on the northern banks of Brahmaputra river. Jogighopa is famous as an industrial area. It is also famous as a historic town. There are caves located in the city. These are of historical importance. Jogighopa is approximately 158 km away from Guwahati.

The five caves on the banks of Brahmaputra on Jogighopa provide a view of the architectural excellence of the people of Assam. These rock cut temples with flight of steps and a platform for the visitors provide a scenic view to the tourists. These caves are preserved and in medieval times, they were the chambers for meditation. The five rock-cut caves are situated at Jogighopa in Assam. These are situated on the bank of the Brahmaputra river in Bongaigoan district. These caves are the fine specimens of the architectures of the Salastambha period. They are part of the rock cut temple tradition of India. The name Jogighopa comes from the name of the five rock cut caves located here. The caves were used by monks for meditation. The name Jogighopa is therefore derived from the word ’cave of mendicants’.

Jogighopa is particularly famous for the ancient architectural sites. They are existing from the time of the Salastambha period or Mlechchha dynasty.  There are five rock cut caves in Jogighopa. They are plain chambers cut in grey rocks. These are the only specimen of rock cut architecture in Assam. In the medieval times cubicles were cut in steep rocks which were used by monks for meditation. These are found in the place.

The caves are the unique examples of rock cut architecture in Assam. These caves at Jogighopa are the testimony of the fact that Assam is also part of the fine specimen of ancient art. The site is preserved and protected by the Archeological Survey of India.

Tourist Attractions in Bongaigaon


The cave measures 2.60 metre breadth, 1.8 metre in depth and 1.90 metre in height. The cave has a roughly rounded ceiling. In the front there is a veranda which is 75 cm long and 35 cm broad. Inside the cave a platform of brick and mud masonry is found. This was added later. There is a chase that runs across the entire breadth of the cave on the top and serves for draining rain water from the front wall. Flights of steps have been cut into the rock on either side and shelf on the top that diverts the rain water from the front wall. The other caves are smaller in size than the preserved ones. There are no verandas and flights in the other caves. Tourists can have a glimpse of the ancient architecture of Assam in the form of these caves. There are no sculptural designs in the cave. The caves are plain chambers cut in grey rocks. The caves are of much archeological importance also.

Kakaijana Reserve Forest

Kakaijana Reserve forest covers an area of around 20 sq kms and is located around 15 kms from Bongaigaon towards the eastern side. It is an ideal spot for eco tourism and was declared a reserve forest in April 1966. It was later converted to a wildlife sanctuary according to plan with effect from 1st April, 1999. The reserve forest is a home to several rare and endangered species of animals like the jungle fowl, pangolin, hornbill, leopard, porcupine, python, lesser adjutant stork, flying squirrel, monitor lizard, mongoose. The sanctuary is a home to rare species like the binturong, jungle fowl, pangolin, hornbill, leopard, porcupine, stork, barking deer, civets etc.

Kakaijana Reserve Forest


Apart from animals there are also bird species found like the red vented bulbul, pied harrier, jungle leubbler etc. The reserve forest has a spring named Kalikapat which flows from the forests towards the paddy fields. There is also a Shiva temple in the sanctuary.

Religious Tourism in Bongaigaon

Bongaigaon is a beautiful industrial town located in western Assam. There are many temples and religious spots in the town of Bongaigaon. Some of them are:

Bageswari Temple

Bageswari temple is a Devi temple located on top of a hill named Bageswari hill at the center of the Bongaigaon town. This is supposed to be the place where Goddess Sati’s trishul fell down when her body was cut into pieces by God Vishnu. The Bageswari hill also has an ancient Shiva temple within a stone cave and a Baba Taraknath temple.

Durga Mahastami is celebrated with much rituals and festivity over here. Every year, buffalo sacrifices take place during that day as a part of offering for the Goddess. Many devotees from different parts of the region come to visit this temple. The temple is a proposed area for a development project taken by the Government. The project includes development of the hillock and creation of an artificial lake fed by a perennial stream. This is initiated as it would improve the water catchment area of the town and the surrounding environment.

Lalmati Duramati Ganesh Temple

The Lalamati-Duramati Ganesh temple is located near Abhayapuri town under North Salmara Sub-division and is one of the oldest temples of Assam. The temple now is in ruins due to destruction by earthquake. The temple has many stone carvings of idols and sculptures which according to archaeologists dates back to 9-10th century. However, the earlier temple structure was destroyed by an earthquake and has been renovated.

The ruins are still existent in the temple premises with the Archaeological Department excavating them with time. The temple is situated in a beautiful natural spot and due to this it has come in the tourism map of Assam. The Assam government with the district administration has come together for further development of the temple and a community hall along with an office building has already been constructed. At present, plans are going on for development of roads leading to the temple ruins.
